Yvette Niyomufasha

Yvette Niyomufasha has been working as dancer and choreographer since 2017 and has created her own dance class called Ikome Nshya where she teaches traditional and contemporary dance.

Born 1993 in Kigali, Rwanda. She started dancing at a very young age. At the age of 18, she ran away from home and sought refuge in traditional and contemporary dance. Her work is influenced by her training in dance as she integrates the concept of abreaction into her work – the extraction of dormant memory stored within muscle, resurfaced through physical movement, of which an individual was previously unaware. These memories can take many forms – traumatic, erotic, comforting, etc. By focusing on the process rather than the anticipated result, her work encourages what can be revealed when one becomes conscious of their kinetic movement in the process of creation. Her work has taken on the form of compositions, graphic notations, sound environments, books, video, and more.

Yvette realised her dream when she performed at Hafi Y'Abagore: A Satellite Project to Learning Feminism in Rwanda by Flinn Works and at that time she was pregnant with a baby boy. Over the years, she has perfected her art through performances at several festivals including Ubumuntu Arts festivals, Iwacu Muzika Festival and Bayimba Arts Festival amongst others.
