Mahmoud Mbega

Mahmoud Mbega is a young, energetic and dedicated choreographer and dance artist based  in Dar es salaam, Tanzania.

He graduated from the Muda Africa 3-year professionalization programme in December 2022, where he was trained in African contemporary and traditional dance. Through this program, he had the chance to work with both local and international choreographers such as Ian Mwaisunga (Tanzania), Tadhi Alawi (Tanzania), Matthieu Nieto (France), Isis Van Gemert (Netherlands), Vanessa Tamburi (Italy), Marcel Leeman (Switzerland) and Maura Morales (Cuba) among others.

He developed his first solo called ‘Ujana na Tamaa’ (Youth and Desire) where he combined dance techniques and crab movements to address the challenges of youth in Tanzanian society. This solo was selected for the Time 2 Dance festival (Tanzania 2022), Stuttgart solo dance festival (2023) and for the UN LDC5 conference in Qatar (2023).

Mbega was also selected to participate in an exchange with Mayotte dance company ‘Kazya dance’ over the next 2 years and Stanbic bank Award winner Thamsanqa Majela (South Africa) has chosen Mbega to be part of a new group production to be performed at the National Arts Festival (South Africa) in July 2023.

Mbega is co-founder of the African Roots dance company which is about storytelling through movement.
